Changpeng Zhao (CZ), the CEO of Binance, recently tweeted that a report that he had been “shot” by a U.S. federal law enforcement agency had been “widely shared” on a Chinese messaging platform. CZ addressed the untrue rumors that appeared on the WeChat messaging app in China, alleging that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) “shot” him. He also used the opportunity to reaffirm the close cooperation between Binance and the FBI.
Harry Denley, A security expert in Metamask, compared the incident to a false rumor that circulated about Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin “dying in a vehicle crash” in 2017. Denley referred to the CZ rumor as an attempt at market manipulation in 2023 and proposed that CZ perform a “proof of existence” with the most recent Binance Smart Chain (BSC) block hash.
